Keeping canning safe: Pressure canner gauge testing offered at AgriLife Extension Office

As canning season approaches, the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service reminds home canners of the importance of annual pressure canner gauge testing. Proper testing ensures your canner operates safely and efficiently, reducing the risk of foodborne illness and spoilage.

Pressure canners with dial gauges should be tested yearly to guarantee accurate readings. Over time, gauges can become inaccurate due to use, handling, or exposure to high temperatures. An inaccurate gauge can result in under-processed food, posing serious health risks.

“We encourage everyone who uses a dial-gauge pressure canner to have it tested annually,” said Danae Hicks, Ellis County Extension Agent for Family and Community Health at the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service. “It’s a quick, simple process that gives you peace of mind and ensures your home-canned goods are safe to enjoy.”

The Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Office in Waxahachie offers free pressure canner gauge testing. Simply bring your lid (with the gauge attached), and our team will test it on-site. Regular testing can help you maintain safe canning practices and protect your family’s health.
For more information or to schedule a testing, call 972-825-5175 or email Danae Hicks at danae.hicks@ag.tamu.edu.

Don't take chances with your canned goods! Make annual gauge testing part of your canning routine.
